What does the phrase, “in your best interest” mean to you?

What about witnessing the consequences of another’s actions?

Behavior analysis examines why humans act the way they do, how challenging behavior can be changed and improved so that a higher quality of life can be achieved. Overcoming problematic behaviors creates an improved and cohesive workspace, study space, volunteer group and involvement in the community helping to improve the overall quality of life.

Seeking to understand how a traumatic event impacts a person’s behavior is the key to implementing behavior modification protocols. By teaching a different approach that improves behavior, a more successful outcome is achieved. Situations in which pathological thinking and behaving are present require a heavy-handed approach, with harsher consequence severe punishment and penalties. Implementation of these approaches requires careful thought, examination and consideration to devise a strategic protocol that installs procedures to provide protection that ensures the safety and health of the public.

Mitigating liability in an organization isn’t regulated to just having general liability or errors and omissions insurance. It isn’t the routine electrical and fire checks that update a structure’s codes. No. It is also conducting health and wellness checks to mitigate the risk factors for illness, change in personality and preventing disease.

Companies who install people protocols such as a life coach, a counselor or psychologist in the workplace show employees that their wellness is a priority for organizations. This implementation should not be used a as a punishment or threat, but more on the lines of much needed nourishment. While some may feel the added expense is unnecessary and problematic, the point of viewed that must be considered is that this is an inexpensive option compared to the consequences of workplace bullying, stalking, ostracizing and harassment that can lead to more violent and aggressive behaviors. These are small steps that a company can take to prevent and address problematic behaviors.

Additionally, hiring a nutritionist to design the snack bar with nutritional ready-to-eat snacks/meals that are palatable, yet high in protein will go further to help employees focus and concentrate on tasks than candy bars, chips and highly processed foods. Offering pro- and prebiotic beverages such as teas and smoothies quench thirst while promoting better food choices and encouraging a move towards a healthier lifestyle.

If we feed our bodies with nutrient rich foods, this can help alleviate pain, mood swings, the afternoon slump and gastrointestinal problems, and over the long term, a reduction in sick days. For some organizations, building in a 20-minute period for employees to nap OR meditate (no phones) can go a long way in increasing productivity, reducing stress and substantially increasing brain activity to power through the afternoon.

Break times not only encourage people to leave their offices, but to interact socially. Employees will look forward to break times, and may use that as a short term goal to finish projects or to further themselves on completion towards a deadline. During these interactions, healthy snacks are available, and a coach or counselor mingles in the crowd for quick questions, concerns or to make an appointment. There is no shame or embarrassment because employees want to feel safe, want to ensure their colleagues are healthy, and taking responsibility for their overall well-being. Employees encourage and hold each other accountable without superiority. Employees don’t feel judged or criticized for making different choices or wanting different things. People’s opinions are acknowledged and validated, not dismissed and ignored. Differences are celebrated, not tolerated. Organizations can encourage employees to enjoy the outdoors alone, without the use of technology. The employee can meditate, practice anxiety reduction techniques such as breathing exercises or other holistic healing practices. This time can be used for the employee to reflect or deepen their understanding of themselves and the world.

In local news, the following situations could have been prevented had there been health and wellness preventative protocols placed:

          1. Guilford County District Court Judge Tom Jarrell died of fentanyl and heroin overdose.

          2. Mozambique pastor dies attempting to emulate Jesus’ 40-day fast.

Modifying challenging behaviors through a set of stringent criteria for behavioral change can be implemented daily with multiple interventions, strategies and controls by a team of researchers, doctors and scientists. Individuals who can recognize red flags of problematic behavior, are the first source for an organization to become aware of a problem. This method of detection can be taught through a fraud awareness training. Preventative protocols show judges that your company is serious about installing procedural methods, training and wellness programs.
