A car abandoned on the side of the highway. Left for dead in a church parking lot. These scenes do not evoke pleasant feelings that our loved one is OK, alive and well. It is of great importance that authorities complete a thorough investigation of both parties to bring the real criminal to justice.

The marital separation and divorce process is a lesson in being civil towards your spouse despite tremendous difficulties, challenges and obstacles. Neighbors can be a source of information to police, EMT, adult protective services, fire and rescue services, especially if there are suspect circumstances that have occurred. Investigating the house and property may provide clues as to the environmental causes or reasons that something unusual has occurred, that there is a suspicion of abuse, neglect or cruel intentions.

Searching the home and premises may uncover a spouse that is in the process of leaving – clothes removed from closets, shoes removed from a rack, a vanity that has been emptied or their personal items packed in storage boxes in the garage. Couple this with conversations with neighbors who inform police that the couple were arguing more frequently, not getting along and hearing strong arguments coming from inside the house, one of them seen at a divorce attorney’s office, increasing the life insurance policy of the missing spouse, liquidating assets and diverting them to one account holder may implicate a person in the disappearance of the spouse. Add a cheating spouse, financial pressure and dishonesty and you have a complex situation developing.

It’s important to know the details about their lifestyle and behavior, such as knowing a person would not take their own life no matter how difficult things became. A disappearance could mean a resident taken from their home, an assault and battery with kidnapping, being drugged, murdered and placed in the crawlspace, under a porch or buried in the backyard. Sounds like a movie doesn’t it? Maybe even a good crime novel. However, any of these things can happen.

Law enforcement needs to continue to pursue the cold case of the missing wife, the disappearance of a spouse or a missing persons case. Red flags pop up when multiple people are harassing, stalking or following the missing spouse, especially if the cheating spouse is implying the missing spouse is suspected of cheating. It goes without saying that both spouses need to be investigated thoroughly, as the person finger pointing, deceiving, lying and slandering may well be the very person who is the criminal. It can be quite the start for law enforcement to realize the criminal was on the scene the whole time, turning the investigation on its ear.
